At the Global Evidence & Impact Conference (GEIC) 2025, some of the most powerful moments came from voices that challenged not just systems, but the stories we have been told and the ones we have not.
One such voice was Dunia Nur, President and CEO of the African Canadian Civic Engagement Council, who brought attention to a reality often overlooked in mainstream narratives.
Her message was both reflective and urgent:
you cannot build a just future without confronting the truths of the past.
Key Highlights:
1. The Erasure Of History
Dunia Nur highlighted a difficult but important truth, Canada has a history of enslaved people of African descent, a history that is often underrepresented or intentionally omitted from educational curricula.
This absence is not just about the past, it shapes:
- How societies understand inequality
- How identities are formed
- How systems of injustice are either challenged or maintained
When history is incomplete, so is our understanding of the present.
2. When The System Restricts Growth
Using a powerful metaphor, she illustrated the impact of systemic barriers.
A flower may have everything it needs to bloom, yet if it is constrained, restricted, or placed in limiting conditions, its growth is affected.
The issue is not the flower itself,
but the environment in which it is forced to grow.
This speaks directly to broader societal structures where individuals are often judged without considering the limitations placed around them.
3. Shifting The Narrative
Dunia Nur challenged the audience to rethink how stories are told and whose voices are amplified.
By acknowledging hidden histories and systemic barriers, we begin to:
- Create more accurate narratives
- Foster deeper understanding
- Open pathways for meaningful change
Because truth is not just about information, it is about recognition and accountability.
The Bigger Reflection
This session was a reminder that silence can be just as powerful as what is spoken.
When histories are erased and realities are overlooked, systems of inequality are allowed to persist without question.
The Ripple Continues
As we reflect on GEIC 2025, one message remains clear:
to create equitable systems, we must first confront the stories that have been left out.
Because like the flower, growth is not only about potential,
it is about the conditions that either nurture or restrict it.
